The trek from Lamayuru to Padum is housed in the beautiful kingdom of Zanskar, a trekker’s delight. The trail of our trek dips into some of the remotest areas, cradled by the Himalayas and the Indus Valley. Along with unmatched beauty, the trek promises you 14 days of uninterrupted bliss and tranquility in the laps of nature. Though the trail is an isolated one, you can feel the ancient cultures and traditions reflected in the handful of Zanskari villages, monasteries, and monasteries that we pass. In fact, the trail from Lamayuru begins from the sacred Lamayuru Monastery, and snakes through beautiful forests and alpine meadows, along with the classic fields of barley and potato that these villages are known for. The entire experience of the trek seems otherworldly, and promises to linger with you for life!

Day 1: Arrive Leh

Upon arrival at Leh Airport you will met by Shan Travel representative and Welcome in traditional Ladakhi style and transfer to our pre-arranged hotel, rest of the day at leisure to acclimatize. Overnight stay at hotel Evening we visit Shanti Stupa A magnificent white-domed structure, The Japanese for World Peace built the Shanti Stupa, at Changspa, on the hilltop, and was inaugurated by Dalai Lama in 1985. Its state of the art work attracts a lot of tourists to Ladakh and is spectacular to watch. From there one can see the nice spectacular view of Leh town. The stupa looks best at night, when it is beautifully illuminated with glittering lights. A large number of tourists come to Ladakh every year to visit this amazing stupa.

This is an extra day added in the itinerary to help you get acclimatized better. Therefore utilize this day and try to stay outdoors. We visit Thiksey Gompa an impressive complex rising tier upon tier on a hill above the village. The monastery has a beautiful 30m high gold-plated statue of Maitreya Buddha; the Buddha of the future is one of the most beautiful monasteries of Ladakh. Later we visit to famous Hemis Gompa; this is the largest monastic foundation of Drukpa Kagyu Order of Tibetan Buddhism. It was built during early 17th century with the blessing of Lama Stagtsang Raspa (Shambunatha), by famous Namgyal dynasty king Singgey Namgyal. Overnight stay at the Hotel. Hike up to the Thiksey and Hemis Monastery, this is only to avoid stressing your body, as it may hinder the process of acclimatization.

After breakfast driving to Alchi. En route you pass through two villages of Nimo and Uleytokpo which still retain their old charm and ethnicity. As you reach Alchi village, you will find a lush green village with houses made of bricks. The most famous aspect of this village is the Alchi monastery. Other than this the place is adorned with Buddhist stupas, chortens, mural paintings, wooden statues and religious history. As you proceed to Lamayuru, you will drive past the villages of Saspol and Khalsi. On the way,you may visit Lamayuru Gompa and the adjacent villages. Lamayuru monastery is the oldest and one of the largest monasteries in Ladakh. Continue your drive to Fatu La which is the highest point on the Leh/Srinagar Highway. Proceed to Heniskut, a small village followed by a visit to Kangral, yet another charming village. Drive past Namika La. Arrive at Mulbekh village. Proceed to Kargil where a giant statue of Lord Buddha has been installed. Stay overnight at a camp in Kargil.

After a hearty meal, drive past the valleys of Sanku, Panikhar and Parkachik of lower Baltisthan. In Panikhar, get dumbfounded by the beautiful vistas of Nun and Kun massif, the highest peaks in the Zanskar range. Continue your drive to Rangdum. Visit Rangdum monastery which is an ancient monastery dating back to 18th century. Drive to Pensi La. On arrival at Pensi La; get awestruck by the spectacular views of Drung Drang glacier, the largest glacier accessible to tourists in Leh. Drive further through the Doda valley and reach Padum. Stay overnight at hotel (Padum).

After a leisurely breakfast, visit Karsha monastery which is the largest monastery in Zanskar in Ladakh region. There are temples, chortens, chapels, assembly halls and residential rooms for monks. Then visit Bardan monastery which comprises an assembly hall with Buddhist statues and several small stupas in clay, wood, bronze and copper. Stay overnight in the camp.

Morning after breakfast start drive to reach Pishu (3610 M) by crossing the Zanskar river with a distance of appox 30 kms in 1 hrs. . Arrive Pishu and overnight stay in tents.

Morning after breakfast start trekking to reach Hanumali (3690 M) by covering appox 14 kms in 4-5 hrs through Pidmu along left bank of Zanskar river. Arrive and overnight stay in tents.

Morning after breakfast start trekking to reach Snertse (3745 M) by covering appox 15 kms in 5-6 hrs after crossing Purfi La (3900 M) with a steep and difficult climb. From here a steep decent to Oma chu river and then climb upto Snertse to a wonderful campsite. Overnight stay in tents.

Morning after breakfast start trekking to reach Lingshet (3800 M) by covering appox 14 kms in 5-6 hrs, crossing over Hanuma La Pass (4700 M). It is not difficult to cross the pass. Arrive and overnight stay in tents.

Morning after breakfast start trekking to reach Marling (3825 M) by covering appox 16 kms in 6-7 hrs by crossing over Singi La or Lion Pass (5230 M) which is the highest pass of this trek. The steep climb is through terminal moraine and then the long glacier. Arrive and overnight stay in tents.

Morning after breakfast start trekking to reach Photoksar (3750 M) by covering appox 14 kms in 6-7 hrs. The climb to Boumitse Pass (4200 M) is easy and descent to Photoksar. There is an abondned Gompa here. Overnight stay in tents.

Morning after breakfast start trekking to reach Hanupata (3770 M) by covering appox 12 kms in 4-5 hrs. A gentle climb upto a large chorten and then a long ascent to the pass. Descent to the river to cross the bridge to reach Photoksar. Overnight stay in tents.

Morning after breakfast start trekking to reach Wanla (3070 M)by covering appox 11 kms in 4-5 hrs. Continuous descent across the slope upto the junction of the river, chorten and fluttering flages on the flat land. After crossing the ridge arrive at Franji La (3410 M) and descend to reach Wanla. Arrive and overnight stay in tents. * Now there is new motorable (Jeeps) road from Wanla to Lamayuru. But this is not a dependable road as its new and prone to breaks and land slide. So we will continue trek to Lamayuru next day.

Morning after breakfast start trekking to reach Lamayuru (3510 M) by covering appox 11 kms in 3-4 hrs. Follow the right bank of the river upto Shillkong gorge and cross the bridge to reach Shilla, pass the chorten and enter narrow and dry gorge to Prinkita La (3725 M) descend further to reach Lamayuru. Overnight stay in tents.

Morning visit to Lamayuru Gompa, one of the oldest and important in Ladakh. Drive to reach Leh by covering appox 120 kms in 5-6 hrs. Arrive and check-into hotel for overnight stay.

Today, the mesmeric journey to one of the finest scenic destinations of India will ultimately come to an end. The entire experience, we are sure, would give you an unmatchable feeling of achievement and satisfaction. In the morning, check-out from the Guesthouse/Hotel and depart from the Leh airport With all the memories in your heart, happily and blissfully. Julley, Safe Journey and Visit again!

When is the right time to travel to ladakh?

Unlike many destinations in India, Ladakh is not an all-year-around destination. Ladakh is a beautiful place that is located in the Himalayan range. It is located on the Indus River bank. This place has amazing scenery and many adventure routes for motorcycle enthusiasts. In short, the best time to visit Leh Ladakh is summer between the end of March to middle of August. The prime tourist time is between June and September.


 Summer in Ladakh


The summer in Ladakh starts from April. The temperature can go as high as 30 degree C. During nights, the temperature would reach the minimum of 16 - 20 degree C. The summer here is neither cold nor hot. The climate would be pleasant all throughout the day. the summer ends in September. Summer ends in September. According to many, the best time to visit this place is between June and August. The summer would be at its prime and thus, the snow would all be melted giving the place a good greenery look. You can find a lot of tourists in this place during this period.

There is another reason for tourists to flock during this period. The Hermis Dance Festival is conducted during this time and it is a very vibrant and colourful event to watch. Starting from camping to trekking, you can enjoy a lot of adventure activities during this time. All passes, mountain routes, trekking routes and others would be open during this period. The lakes would be clear and it would be easy to camp near the river.

The top activities to enjoy during summer are Stok festival and Matho festival in March and May, Hemis festival and Phyang festival in June to August. Nubra Valley is a must visit for the summer tourists. Road trips to Manali and Sri Nagar would be at its prime beauty. In short, the best time to visit Leh Ladakh is summer between the end of March to middle of August. The prime tourist time is between June and August.


 Monsoon in Ladakh


Rainfall starts in June and end by September. As you would have guessed this place would receive a lot of rainfall. The temperature would not be very cold, but the place would not be at its prime beauty. Most of the motorcycle and trekking routes would be blocked due to the rain. Many attractions would become inaccessible during this season. The temperature would be very pleasant and unless you want to drench in rain every day, it is better to avoid monsoon season. If you are planning to visit Ladakh during monsoon, make sure to watch Diskit and Thiksey festivals. You would be able to find considerable number of tourists during this season as the motorcycle tour passes would be at its prime beauty during this season. The trekking routes would be closed for safety purpose.


 Winter in Ladakh


The winter starts from the second week of October and ends by February. The temperature can go as low as -20 degree C and as high as 2 degree C. The lakes would be frozen, motorcycle passes would be closed and trekking routes would be blocked. Almost all adventure activities becomes either dangerous or blocked. Still you can find a lot of tourists here during winter. Those who come to Ladakh for wildlife attraction would choose winter. This is when you can spot a lot of snow leopards here. Moreover, Spituk and Losar festivals happen in winter season. Last but not least, the place would be very beautiful like a fairy tale snow land. A lot of people consider winter as the best time to visit Ladakh due to the scenic beauty of the place.

How to reach Ladakh | Ladakh Journey Organiser

Ladakh is called the adventure capital of the country for a genuine reason. Srinagar to Leh (Primary Tactic)


Reach Ladakh from Kashmir Valley through Kargil, which is around 434 kms. This route remains open from early June to November. Zoji-La pass of the Himalayan ranges that is a gateway to Ladakh is approximately 11,500 feet (3,505 m high) above the sea level. J&K State Road Transport Corporation, J&K SRTC, runs regular deluxe and ordinary bus services between Srinagar and Leh. There's a night stay in Kargil. You can also hire cars, jeeps or taxis in Srinagar. If traveling in groups, you can rent deluxe buses for Leh, Kargil or Padum (Zanskar) from J&K SRTC at Srinagar.


Manali to Leh (Secondary Tactic)


Manali-Leh road of 473 kms, since 1989 has been another route to Ladakh. This route is open from mid-June to early October. The road passes through the desert plateau of Rupsho and is around 3,660m to 4,570m high. There are a number of high passes falling on the route,Taglang-La being second highest motorable road in the world, 17,469 feet (5,235m) above the sea level. Himachal Pradesh Tourism (HRTC) and J&K SRTC run daily deluxe and ordinary buses between Manali and Leh; that takes around hours (or two days) with night halt in camps at Sarchu or Pang. You can also hire a Gypsy or jeep taxis.


By Air (Third Tactic)


Leh - Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport is the main airport of the area. The flights are directly connected from Delhi, Srinagar and Jammu; by the flights run by Air India, Go Air and Jet Airways. The schedules are set already though, but these are subject to change according to the weather. It is advised that you keep your plans flexible.
